First impressions count, and your CV is the first thing that recruiters and HR professionals will see. Your skills and attributes are some of the most important aspects of your CV, and you need to be able to sum them up without always relying on buzzwords and clichés.
One survey of over 2,000 applications showed that the following words and phrases were the most commonly used in that sample:
- Hard-working: 25%
- Reliable: 18.3%
- Team player: 11.6%
- Dedicated: 9.5%
- Passionate: 8.2%
- Strategic thinker: 6.8%
- Results-driven: 4.5%
- Dynamic: 3.5%
Whilst these words are descriptive and portray skills that employers are looking for, lack of originality can kill your chances of getting an interview. It may suggest that you’ve put little effort into personalising your CV and puts you in danger of sounding like everyone else, which is NOT what recruiters are looking for.
