The Role: Are you a proven Construction Director seeking a new role? A rare opportunity to join a global leader in the renewable energy sector has become available in my client's construction management team in Kent, UK. The role, a permanent / staff position, requires experience in the EPC of utility scale solar PV projects. The Construction Director will be responsible for managing a project from inception to completion, ensuring that it is delivered on-time, within scope and within budget. The Construction Director will work closely with the site engineers, design & engineering team, project managers. H&S team and the finance team within my client, as well as externally with the subcontractors, equipment suppliers and clients/developers to ensure on schedule completion and compliance with the company's quality standards. As Construction Director, your responsibilities will include:

  • Works effectively as part of the senior management team and takes a "whole company" perspective to manage issues.
  • Is responsible for effectively managing the Construction function to ensure best practices are followed, costs are controlled, the company maximizes revenue generation and contribution to the company's operating profit, and increases the value added to the company.
  • In conjunction with Managing Directors and Project Directors/Project Managers, agree to the direction of build and construction activities planning
  • Identifies critical path issues of the projects and put plans in place to meet key dates.
  • Identifies in advance a schedule of information required to meet the building program and circulates it as necessary.
  • Produces build programs and monitors and reviews in conjunction with Project Managers to ensure adherence to programs.
  • Liaises with the Managing Directors and Project Directors/Project Managers on the appointment of suitable sub-contractors and local suppliers to ensure adequate resources and expertise to achieve required quality within agreed timescales.
  • Liaises with the Head of Operations to ensure up-to-date understanding of Completion targets in the area to ensure the Build Programme optimizes revenue generation for each development.
  • Monitor and inspect developments regularly to ensure that all quality control procedures are being adhered to and that the highest standards of build are being achieved and reflected in good Audit results.
  • Liaise with the Finance Department to ensure the site and build costs are being controlled within budget. Attend all cost value comparison meetings to review costs and take necessary action to rectify variances.
  • Review all extra costs and variation orders to minimize cost whilst ensuring program and quality are achieved.
  • Assists with the right quantity and calibre of construction staff to be recruited, and to company policy and procedures.
  • Leads, motivates, communicates with, develops, appraises, and performance manages construction site staff to ensure they are fully motivated to achieve the best performance to meet the company's needs.
  • Comply with responsibilities as laid down in the Group's Health, Safety & Environment Policy to ensure a safe working environment for employed, subcontractors, and members of the public.
  • Ensure compliance with the same, throughout the Department.
  • Review specific training needs with the Health & Safety Manager and ensure appropriate training throughout the Area Team.
  • Prepares papers for inclusion in Project Monthly Reports, presents current issues at Regional Management Meetings, and is involved in discussing and influencing all aspects of the business

Requirements As Head of Construction at Renewables & Storage Development, you need to have the following skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 8+ years of experience in the construction of solar plants
  • Knowledge of construction methods and technologies, and ability to interpret technical drawings and contracts
  • Knowledge of building code requirements and scheduling methods
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with a constant eye on quality
  • Ability to work with multination teams and in different time zones
  • Frequent travel requirements
  • Knowledge of job site safety practices required
  • Construction Management certifications (CCM, CPC) would be a plus
