A critical new role has arisen with my client, an established international renewable energy developer, who are seeking a PPA Director to join their existing operation in London. This is a great opportunity to join a global giant in the renewable energy sector in a strategically important position. The successful candidate will lead the commercial negotiation of PPA's and other structured energy contracts and will report directly to the Global Head of Project Development.

As PPA Director your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Collaborate closely with the Project Development team, Legal team and other Subject Matter Experts to ensure the contracts meet my client's risk management guidelines and that material risks are clearly communicated through the relevant process.
  • Coordinate with Project Development, Project Finance, Engineering Procurement and Construction to ensure contracts are aligned with the project development profile (schedule, cost, risk etc.)
  • Present and represent transactions in internal meetings/committees
  • Interface closely with exec leadership team, legal, finance, accounting, tax, risk management, internal audit, and other critical functions essential to deal negotiations and approvals
  • Develop and maintain a streamlined negotiation process to minimize risk, negotiating time, and legal costs, while ensuring strict adherence to my client's business model
  • Follow procedures that ensure a timely and complete handover of executed commercial agreements to the execution teams responsible for delivering on contractual obligations.
  • Coordinate and project manage the negotiation process and timeline.
  • Travel to customer locations as necessary for negotiations and relationship development
  • Help develop PPA negotiating depth in the department by training other personnel on PPAs
  • Other duties as assigned including negotiating other related customer-facing agreements if required

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

  • A degree in Business, Finance or Engineering, preferred
  • 10+ years' experience in energy sales, energy trading and/or energy contract structuring
  • Experience negotiating PPAs, Contracts for Differences, International Swaps and Derivative Association Master Agreements ("ISDA") and other structured energy contracts in both regulated and competitive electricity markets.
  • Familiarity with structured project finance and the sensitivities of equity, lenders, and tax equity as it relates to PPA provisions.
  • Demonstrable experience in Contract Negotiation, Project Finance, Sales or Origination
  • Experience in the Power Industry and/or Renewable Energy Market Sector
  • Fluent in English, a second fluent language will be a plus
  • Must be willing to travel (i.e., 30-40%) both domestically and internationally

In addition to the above you will also need to demonstrate:

  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills
  • Strong knowledge of the energy markets, regulatory frameworks and energy contract structures
  • Exemplary customer service skills, interfacing directly with counterparty company heads, vice presidents, and legal counsel
  • Strong legal acumen, negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to discern subtle requirements, nuances and differences within complex commercial and legal documents
  • Solid technical acumen for, or existing knowledge of, solar power plant technology, project development, construction, operation, maintenance and performance
  • Commitment to Scope of Authority and Business Code of Conduct; act and guide others with integrity
  • Highly effective time management skills, with the ability to execute on multiple negotiations and business objectives simultaneously
