Software Engineer - 12‑Month Contract (Inside IR35)

Location: Newcastle (hybrid working - 3 days a week onsite)
Hours: 35 per week
Rate: £44.85 per hour PAYE / £60 per hour Umbrella

Carbon60 are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join their defence client's Agile Scrum team working on innovative, cloud‑based geospatial software. This is a great opportunity to be part of a modern engineering environment using up‑to‑date cloud technologies and contributing to highly impactful solutions.

About the role:
You'll be involved in the full software development lifecycle - from designing and building new features to testing, reviewing code, and helping to deliver high‑quality, scalable cloud services. You'll work closely with other engineers, testers and product team members, contributing to sprint planning, stand‑ups and reviews.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop clean, maintainable, high‑quality Java code.
  • Build and maintain cloud‑based services.
  • Write unit tests and contribute to automated test coverage.
  • Take part in design and code reviews.
  • Collaborate within an Agile/Scrum environment to meet sprint goals.
  • Document your work and share knowledge with the wider team.

Essential skills:

  • Strong commercial experience with Java.
  • Experience developing cloud services.
  • Good understanding of unit testing and quality assurance.
  • Comfortable working in Agile teams.

Nice‑to‑have skills:

  • Knowledge of DevSecOps tools such as Tekton, ArgoCD or SonarQube.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Familiarity with the Quarkus framework.
  • Front‑end development experience using Angular.

Security clearance:
You must already have, or be eligible to obtain, SC Clearance.

Working pattern:
This role requires around 60% onsite work each week. Standard hours are 35 per week, worked over 4.5 days between 7am and 7pm (flexible within business needs). Occasional travel between UK sites may be required.
