For people of all ages, interests, abilities and backgrounds, Apprenticeships can provide a fantastic route into an exciting and fulfilling career. They provide people vital skills, knowledge, qualifications and hands-on experience required to not only find a role within their chosen industry or area of interest but thrive within it too.
At Carbon60 we have – for several decades – had the privilege of working with talented individuals and global, industry-leading organisations, and connecting them through apprenticeship programmes that provide incredible training, development and employment opportunities, and help to create stronger workforces for the future.
To highlight the power and potential of such partnerships, we asked Aishath Naufa Ahmed – a Graduate Aircraft Engineer at STS Aviation – to tell us about their journey and experience.
So Aishath, tell us about your journey so far
“My name is Aishath Naufa Ahmed, and I am a Graduate Aircraft Engineer at STS Aviation Services in Birmingham.
“I have wanted to work in the aviation industry in some way since I was young; when I was 8, I remember wanting to grow up and become a Cabin Crew member or something like that, but eventually I was drawn to Aircraft Engineering.
“Unfortunately, in the Maldives – where I was born and raised – opportunities to enter the industry are rare, especially for females. Thankfully things a different in the UK!
“Despite studying hard throughout my early education, I gained disappointing O-level results. But that didn’t stop me! I enrolled in a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and graduated with distinction. However, universities only accepted the Level 3 Extended Diploma, which wasn't available at the time, leaving me devastated.
“With support from my principal the course got registered in the Maldives, and I completed the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering with additional modules. I was the first person in the Maldives to graduate with triple distinction, opening this pathway to others – something I am extremely proud.
“After moving to the UK, I later earned a First Class BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance Systems from the University of South Wales, completing 12 EASA and 12 CAA modules. These qualifications are crucial for obtaining the license of a licensed aircraft engineer.
“Breaking into aviation can be challenging for anyone, but I did initially find it very difficult. When I first applied for jobs, having an international passport became a concern, as most companies were not hiring international students. That’s why I looked for alternative avenues.”
Can you give us some insight into your apprenticeship experience?
“Knowing that it would be more difficult for me to find my own way into an aviation career, I decided to look for help and guidance on what options were available to me. It was at this point that I connected with Carbon60.
“Thanks to Carbon60 and their wonderful team, including Chris Blackburn and Gayle Wallace, I was able to apply for a programme with STS Aviation, who partner with Carbon60 to provide aviation career opportunities to people just like me.
“The process with Carbon60 and STS, who accept applications from people with international passports, was seamless, from the selection process through to the interview and assessment day phases, and I was provided with all the help I needed to prepare throughout.
“Since joining the programme, my day-to-day work has been rewarding, allowing me to handle various tasks, gain exposure, and log my CAP 741 logbook hours. I enjoy working with different people all over the world, hearing about their paths to this field, and receiving their advice and guidance as I progress in my career. The highlight is seeing aircraft in and out of the hangar every day. Although I’ve only been in the industry for 4 months and am yet to face any major challenges, I know I will be ready for any that arise and will always be supported to take them on.
“In addition to my work, I am participating in the "Women in Leadership" programme with Carbon60 and Raise the Bar. This course has helped me reflect on and build my leadership skills and develop strategies for navigating my career in a what has historically been a male-dominated field.
“I am passionate about empowering women and encouraging them to pursue careers in aviation and engineering, fields that are often underrepresented by females. Through this programme, I hope to inspire more women to explore these opportunities and break barriers in industries like ours."
What advice would you give anyone on a similar path?
“Never put a limit on your opportunities and what you can achieve. I truly believe with will and determination, nothing is impossible and EVERYTHING is possible. I like to think I am an example of that.
“Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, and reach out for help, support and guidance. I highly recommend utilising the expertise of those in the industry you want to establish a career in. I am so glad that my journey so far has led me to connecting with Carbon60 and STS Aviation – both companies, and their amazing people, have provided immense support and always helped me resolve any problems I’ve faced.
“I live by a famous quote from Henry Ford, who said “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that aircraft take off against the wind, not with it.”
“If you’re reading this, I hope you take those words on board too. And take some inspiration from my story so far. Keep working hard and the results will follow!”
